Why travel this route

Hoi An gets very busy between ten and six. The countryside around it does not. A boat through the water coconut palms, a bicycle along the rice-field lanes and a couple of hours in the craft villages give you the town's actual context.

You also cook. The class starts at the market, moves to a kitchen and ends with the dishes Hoi An is known for — which, after a morning on a bicycle, is the correct order of events.

  • Boat through the water coconut groves of a working fishing village
  • Watch and try the round net fishing that supplies the town's restaurants
  • Cycle country lanes between rice paddies and vegetable villages
  • Shop the market, then cook Hoi An's signature dishes in a local kitchen
  • Throw your own piece at Thanh Ha ceramic village, a pottery settlement five centuries old
  • Try casting a net at Cam Nam fishing village
  • Finish in the ancient town as the lanterns come on

Where you sleep, night by night

Good to know before you book

Bicycles, helmets, the boat, the class and lunch are all included. The route is flat and the vehicle follows.

Central Vietnam floods in October and November and the low-lying lanes go under water. The cooking class and the town still run; the cycling may be rerouted.

Frequently asked questions

Can we do this without a bicycle?
Yes. The same day runs by vehicle and boat, with a shorter walk in the craft villages.
Is the cooking class hands-on?
Yes, three or four dishes each, starting at the market. Vegetarian menus available if you tell us in advance.
Does this work as a family day?
Very well. The basket boat, the net fishing and the pottery all suit children, and the day can be shortened.
How does it fit around beach time?
We usually run it in the morning and leave the afternoon free for An Bang beach, which is fifteen minutes away.
